Nila got a cake decorating set for Christmas and has been trying her hand at making fancy (and delicious) cakes. This is her first attempt at a layered cake.

This weekend we had the wonderful opportunity to lose our power for a few hours one night. We're rather fond of electricity, so being without was a little annoying. I grabbed a couple outdoor solar lights that had charged up over the day and placed them in the house for some light.
And then I went outside to see what the neighborhood was like in the dark. Fortunately (or not), the neighborhood right next to us hadn't lost power, so it kept us pretty well lit up.
We got a nasty rain/ice/snow storm this week. All of our trees/bushes were covered in ice. We lucked out and didn’t lose anything other than a few branches, though.

Travelled to Minneapolis this weekend for a quick trip. Molly had never been there, let alone to the Mall of America, so it'd seemed as good of a time as any to go. I didn't take as many pictures as I thought I would, mainly because I didn't carry the camera everywhere with me - I know, shame on me. I took a few out the window of our hotel room and one of them is below.
I’ve been behind on my picture taking lately because we’ve been busy working in the kitchen. This picture captures a few of the things we’ve accomplished…

This weekend we went to the FM Derby Girls roller derby bout against Duluth. I thought it was pretty fun to go see, although the Civic Center is a little older and the seats are kind of cramped. If you haven't seen roller derby before, you should give it a shot - it's definitely interesting.
This is the first time I've tried faking the "tilt-shift" effect, but I rather like how it turned out. There's certainly a bit of thinking necessary to get it right, and I'm not even sure I did.
Other photos from the bout are here.
It snowed a bunch while we were at work on Friday so when we got home we decided to build a snow dog. We had such a cute model, how could we resist?

We had a few house guests this weekend. In addition to Shaw and Maureen on Friday night, Anna and her entourage are spending the night with us tonight. Pictured left to right, we have: India, Sheba, Buddy Buffalo, Alexandria, Buttons, Emma, and Gloria.

Make-A-Wish's annual Walk for Wishes event is next weekend at the UP Center, where I'll be the creepy guy taking pictures of everyone. It should be a good time. Most people, for some reason, assume that the walk takes place on the actual ice rink (pictured below), but it's actually through the concourse above. Lighting isn't great up there, so I usually camp out near a window to get decent shots.
Below is an HDR of the ice rink. Being handheld and all, I think it turned out pretty well.
